Safety Town

My parents were very good at keeping me in a protective bubble. There are many things that I remember growing up which had an impact on me. One thing that stands out for me is going to Safety Town. Granted I'm sure I learned the importance of what is now called "Stranger Danger", but what I remember about Safety Town was 1) My best friend Julie was with me 2) Getting to go to a big kid school (aka: an elementary school) 3)Riding around on big wheels in a make shift town that was complete with stop signs and stop lights.

Safety Town is a program that is put on by the local police department. It is limited for kids ages 4-6, and during the program kids are taught about all kinds of safety.

I am so appreciative for having a wonderful childhood that I find that I want my own children to have these same experiences. Safety Town has it come along way since 1985!! I was fortunate to get Patrick enrolled a few summers ago, and this year it was Wyatt's turn to go.

Wyatt had a blast going. He learned about "Stranger Danger", Gun Safety, Water Safety, Fire Safety, Bus Safety and so much more. After learning about stranger safety, the kids were put in a real life situation. The plan was that an under cover police officer was to approach the kids. Hopefully, the kids would run away and get an adult just as they had learned.

The under cover police officer approached Wyatt and said that she lost her dog; God love him, but my boy is too darn friendly sometimes. He was quick to introduce himself and ask what the dog's name was. When the other police officers told him that he failed the test, he put his head in hands and began to cry. The police officer said that Wyatt told him "Oh no!! I screwed up!!"

Wyatt definitely walked away learning a lot from his experience at Safety Town. It's so funny because he has since been teaching and quizzing Quintin the last few days. On a side note; Wyatt attached himself to one of the camp counselors because he swore it was my nephew Kyle..they do have similar mannerisms and looked a little bit alike, but it wasn't him. Everyone got a real kick out it...

Here's a video I put together from his graduation...Enjoy..
